Tradition twisted
When my grandfather was new here, the other garment workers, who spoke better English, sent him out for “secondhand soup sandwiches” as a joke. And now it’s a phrase that’s been passed down like an heirloom in my family, a symbol of where we came from and who we are.
It’s silly, it’s nonsensical, it’s a random mix of alliterative stream of consciousness. It captures us a family. More broadly, it captures us as a Jewish culture. And even more broadly, it captures every immigrant, everyexile, everyone who is a proud random mix.
What does ExileBakery make? It makes twisted traditional Ashkenazi baked goods. It makes secondhand soup sandwiches.
